Think of something that took you a really long time to learn – for me it was skiing. It was so difficult to stay up on those two pieces wood. I had to devote a lot of mental energy, not to mention the physical energy, trying to remember all the things that I needed to do. It took a lot of practice on that “bunny hill” before I dared to conquer the mountain. But with persistence and practice, it became easier and easier. Soon I no longer had to think about what I needed to do – it just happened “naturally." We constantly read about successful people who seem to be able to do things so easily – it seems so natural for them. In reality these successful people have developed good, productive habits.
"Skiing, exercising, speaking, training, sales techniques, the way we handle finances, and every other habit-forming activity all follow the same behavioral and neurological patterns," says Charles Duhigg in his book The Power of Habit. His book explores the science behind why we do what we do and the power of habits in our lives.
