The Power of Habit: Part II

DATE: June 10, 2015
TIME: 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM EDT
COST: Free

In part one of this webinar we learned how habits start, why habits are hard to break and steps to create productive habits. In his book The Power of Habit, Charles Duhigg interviewed a major in the Army who told him, “Once you see everything as a bunch of habits, it's like someone gave you the key to success." We are now going to dig into why some of us are more successful at creating productive habits than others and how to remove the barriers that keep us forming new habits.  We discuss:

  • Key steps in identifying the real barriers of creating desired habits
  • The role of will and belief
  • How to create the right triggers, routines and rewards to sustain a desired habit

Conflict is a normal and necessary part of healthy relationships yet is is one of the greatest challenges for most leaders. Some leaders completely avoid conflict at all cost and other leaders embrace it every chance they get ... which in turn, causes people to avoid them. As leaders we must learn to be confident in leading ourselves and others through proper conflict resolution. When a leader mismanages conflict it can harm relationships, break down trust and have long term results on projects… ultimately hitting the bottom line and affecting the entire organization. On the contrary when conflict is handled in a respectful and positive way, it creates the opportunity for the following:

  • growth
  • clarity
  • commitment
  • strengthens the bond between team members
  • increases buy-in

Through learning the skills you need for successful conflict resolution (which includes managing conflicts between your team members as a mediator), you can face disagreements with confidence and keep your personal and professional relationships strong and growing.

TIME: 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM EDT

Everything in our our culture centers on doing more... more emails, more meetings, more reduction of staff and budget cuts... the list is endless. In the race between you and the clock – who wins? Would you rather manage a difficult employee than try to manage your time? And who has enough time for the extras – hobbies, volunteer work, and family!? When did family become an extra? In this informative session we will explore solutions for balancing time for work, home, and self, help you introduce effective time management techniques for you and your team, and discuss what to do when the unexpected comes along and rocks your boat. We will discuss how to focus on what is most important, how less can be more and the principle of "When I go slow..... I go fast"

  • How to structure your schedule so that you are ready for deadlines and not surprised by them
  • How to become aware of your energy cycle so you can use it to your advantage
  • How to train your staff to manage their time so that their crises don’t become yours
  • How to set boundaries and say "no" with confidence when you need to

The Power of Habit: Part I

Think of something that took you a really long time to learn – for me it was skiing.  It was so difficult to stay up on those two pieces wood. I had to devote a lot of mental energy, not to mention the physical energy, trying to remember all the things that I needed to do.  It took a lot of practice on that “bunny hill” before I dared to conquer the mountain.  But with persistence and practice, it became easier and easier. Soon I no longer had to think about what I needed to do – it just happened “naturally."  We constantly read about successful people who seem to be able to do things so easily – it seems so natural for them.  In reality these successful people have developed good, productive habits.

"Skiing, exercising, speaking, training, sales techniques, the way we handle finances, and every other habit-forming activity all follow the same behavioral and neurological patterns," says Charles Duhigg in his book The Power of Habit.  His book explores the science behind why we do what we do and the power of habits in our lives.

In part one of this webinar we will discuss:

  • How every habit starts
  • Why habits are nearly impossible to break
  • Steps to create new productive habits
